The Challenger Connection
A fragment of one of Bert Hinkler’s original 1911 wooden gliders was carried into space by Commander Dick Scobee on the Challenger mission in January 1986. After the disaster the piece was recovered from the Atlantic and returned to Bundaberg, where it is now on public display.
Hinkler House — “Mon Repos”
Hinkler’s English home was dismantled brick-by-brick in 1983 and rebuilt in the Bundaberg Botanic Gardens as a living memorial museum.
Mon Repos Beach
The exact stretch of sand where the teenage Hinkler launched his home-built gliders in 1911–12. Today it is also one of Australia’s most important loggerhead turtle nesting sites.
